Winning the Battle of Life: Dealing with Anger Issues

Anger: can be a clever remark, verbal attack, or in its most common form an exploding temper. We struggle with that form of anger (exploding) because it is childish. Yet many people are angry, but are almost totally unaware of it. Some people try to pretend that they have no anger, but there is chaos within. They will even say, "I am not anger." Yet there sharp voice and other physical feature shows the anger within.

Yes, anger is a natural emotion, but misplaced anger is deadly. You can’t “stew” on your anger, over and over again. Internalizing what is making you upset builds ups a strong hostility and a stronghold in your life.

Think of times when you have been angry? What was the result? How did you cool down?

There are times when we have every reason to feel angry. People can disappoints us, let us down, hurt us or hurt our family. Anger is a valid human emotion. But there are times when our anger can seriously be misplaced.

For example, Apostle Paul who was once known as Saul really wrestled with anger.

He was extremely angry with the new Jewish Sect, The Way, later known as the Christians. Looking through Jewish eyes in 60 AD, it may have been called a righteous indignation by a fellow Jewish brother, but in reality Paul killed hundreds of new Christian because he was angry that they believed in Yeshua ( Jesus the Christ).

Acts 9:1-2 (NLT)
1 Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath. He was eager to destroy the Lord's followers, so he went to the high priest. 2 He requested letters addressed to the synagogues in Damascus, asking their cooperation in the arrest of any followers of the Way he found there. He wanted to bring them -- both men and women -- back to Jerusalem in chains.

Later the redeemed Paul (was Saul) tells his spiritual son Timothy about how awful anger can be.

I Timothy 1:12-14
12 How thankful I am to Christ Jesus our Lord for considering me trustworthy and appointing me to serve him, 13 even though I used to scoff at the name of Christ. I hunted down his people, harming them in every way I could. But God had mercy on me because I did it in ignorance and unbelief. 14 Oh, how kind and gracious the Lord was! He filled me completely with faith and the love of Christ Jesus.

One version reads: NKJV

“And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who had enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.”

This verse speaks of an “insolent man”. The Greek word for “insolent man” can be translated “violent aggressor” (code word for angry furious man)

Paul writes to the Galatians 5: 19-21 (Get Rid of your anger)

We find in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) there are over 450 references where the word anger is used. Over 75 percent of these references relate to God’s anger. Jesus showed anger a number of times. Mark 3:1-5

1 Jesus went into the synagogue again and noticed a man with a deformed hand. 2 Since it was the Sabbath, Jesus' enemies watched him closely. Would he heal the man's hand on the Sabbath? If he did, they planned to condemn him. 3 Jesus said to the man, "Come and stand in front of everyone." 4 Then he turned to his critics and asked, "Is it legal to do good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing harm? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?" But they wouldn't answer him. 5 He looked around at them angrily, because he was deeply disturbed by their hard hearts. Then he said to the man, "Reach out your hand." The man reached out his hand, and it became normal again!

So how does Paul reconcile his thoughts in Galatians to get rid of anger with the fact that Jesus did get angry?

Holy Spirit reveals it to Paul as he writes the Ephesians Church:

Ephesians 4: 26 (NLT) And, "don't sin by letting anger gain control over you." Don't let the sun go down while you are still angry.

You must be aware of your angry and then get rid of it. Don't let it consume you like fire and gain control of you. For human beings, there is really no such thing as righteous anger. Only God can have righteous anger, because He is the only one who is righteous!

Anger becomes sinful when you let it control your entire being and then you spin out of control into fury. While internalizing your anger, if you don't getting rid of it, pride will come in. Once pride comes you will hold on to anger for months, maybe years, never letting it go, except by the grace of God. For pride cements your anger and binds it with hostility.
I have her of children who were beaten unmercifully, because their parents' anger overtook them and they lost control.

Single Women: Don’t date an angry man. If a man has a temper with his friends, mothers, siblings constantly or on regular basis he will one day have a violent temper against you.

Also, anger is the killer emotion. In full force it can take someone’s life. However, anger kills you internally as well.

According to the Webster’s New World Dictionary. The word anger is derived own the base "angh" which means constricted, narrow, tightness, distress.

The word Angina, is defined as any localized spasm of pain. It is derived from the same base word, angh, which links anger and angina together. There is a connection between the physical and the emotional.

There are 2 angry men in the Book of Esther. Xerxes and Haman. Xerxes anger destroys a Queen. Haman anger attempted to destroy an entire human race.

Question: What happens when your anger subsides? A flood of your emotions has swept you up and there is a aftermath of destruction, and brokenness all around?

If you are an angry woman, it means that you have not forgiven, you are not over what happened to you, you are in rage, and you are not whole. Take a deep breath and pray to God to release you from an angry spirit. Let go of the past hurts and shame, the injustice and pain. Let it go and find peace in your soul. Forgive yourself and forgive those who hurt you. I am far from perfect and I have made many mistakes before and after knowing Jesus Christ. But the one thing I know is that no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and I am forgiven.

May the grace of God be with you as you travel on a new journey of peace, hope and love. It is possible to just get rid of it. Just let it go and free your soul. Make peace with yourself and others.

For Him Only,
Pastor Patricia
